John Arkinstall of Dunvegan was a successful grower of high quality pedigreed seed for 35 years. Specializing in forage crops, he produces his first field of certified Timothy in 1932 and by 1956 his entire crop acres were devoted to the production of pure seed of several varieties.

Mr. Arkinstall co-operated with the Plant Products Division of Agriculture Canada in establishing the first block system of Timothy seed, to reduce the danger of cross-pollination. An ardent supporter of better seeds,, he won championships in major shows including the Ottawa Winter Fair, Royal Winter Fair and the International in Chicago.

He served as President of the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association and was active in the local Agricultural Society, Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Plowmen’s Association and Public School Board.

A long-time member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association, John Arkenstall was awarded the Robertson Award and received the Ottawa Farm Journal trophy for outstanding achievement as a seed grower.
